On February 2nd, 2017, the Centre for Wetlands and Waste Management Studies(CWWS), University of Uyo, Uyo, Nigeria celebrated the World Wetlands Day. The event however, began with a radio phone-in programme on January 26, 2017.
Activities carried out on February 2nd, include a visit to an Urban Wetland site (Mbiabong Wetland) in Uyo. Public lectures and exhibitions of Wetlands products(flora and fauna). The Lead Lecture on the topic: "Wetlands for Disaster Risk Reduction" was delivered by Professor Imoh Ukpong of the University of Uyo, a professor of Biogeography in the University of Uyo. Other lecturers and their topics were:
- Dr. Ubong Harrison (Coordinator, Nigerian Erosion and Watershed Management Project, Akwa Ibom state) - "Welands sustain lives: How will we use them?"
- Mr. Unyime Robinson, CEO, Water Safety Initiative Foundation - "Wetlands: A Natural Safeguard Against Disasters"
- Dr. Faith Ekong, Head, Department of Urban and Regional Planning, University of Uyo, Uyo, Nigeria - "Five Wetlands that help us cope with extreme events"
The World Wetlands Day Celebration which was opened by the Vice Chancellor, University of Uyo,Professor Enefiok Essien, was attended by academics, members of Civil Society Organizations, students from secondary and tertiary institutions, as well as the general public. The 2017 World Wetlands Day celebration by the Centre received adequate publicity in both the print and electronic media, and has created awareness among the populace on the importance of wetlands to life.
